"Though the HTC One S might find itself overshadowed by its quad-core endowed brother, the One X, this device has nothing to be ashamed of. It features a far more hand-friendly design, is available with a cool micro-arc oxidized aluminum body, and makes use of the exact same software and 8 megapixel camera as the X.

"The HTC One S comes with a powerful 8MP snapper on board. It's a real belter here and we'd say it definitely gives the Samsung Galaxy S2 a run for its money. HTC has made a real point of stressing how quickly it can take photos and we can verify this is not all marketing speak. You can fire this phone up from standby and have a photograph snapped in less than two seconds.

"In isolation the One S display is perfectly good. It has that heavy saturation common to Super AMOLED, which in some cases is good at boosting the vibrancy of colours. But it also means that things don't really look natural, and when the display dims, it all looks a little grubby. Not as grubby as the Galaxy Nexus, but noticeably inferior to the latest displays. "My immediate reaction upon seeing that the One S has a 1,650mAh battery was that it wouldn’t be enough......Nonetheless, even with a 40-minute photography session included, the One S managed to go a full 24 hours between charges for me, which is reliable endurance by anyone’s smartphone standards. Just be warned that pushing that 1.5GHz dual-core processor to its maximum won’t take you as far as other, less powerful, phones might." 8.1/10

"For a mid-range phone the One S actually sports some pretty impressive specs. The dual-core 1.7GHz processor and 1GB of RAM should be able to handle just about any app or game currently on the Android market with relative ease." 80/100

"The thinnest HTC smartphone yet, the One S is just 7.8mm thin but does not feel flimsy. In fact, the handset just screams "premium" and "finely designed", and is a joy to hold. We found it to be slightly slippery, but that's just a minor quibble. " 4/5 Stars

"It’s not perfect – the inaccessible battery and especially the non-expandable storage are missteps (16GB runs out quickly these days) and the use of a micro SIM seems likely to wind up non-contract users – but it looks and feels like one of the best handsets HTC has produced thus far, and the fact that it’s built for Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich means you’re getting a slick user-friendly experience (and access to thousands of superb apps) to boot.

"From the moment I placed the HTC One S in my hand, I was struck with how premium the phone feels. Luxuriously sculpted from a single block of anodized aluminum with smoothly tapered edges, the One S is sturdy yet manages to look finely crafted. That's a mean feat since the handset is breathtakingly thin, just 0.31 inch thick." 4/5 Stars

"Scrolling, panning around and pinching to zoom work smoothly as advertised, and the Adobe Flash rendering is pretty seamless. The phone flickers for a second before it reflows the page upon double tap, and text reflow could be more fluid and intuitive. In addition, the Bookmarks, Tabs, etc. buttons that are constantly appearing and disappearing at the bottom of the screen make for a somewhat irritating experience." 8/10 Stars

"The AMOLED screen is clear and highly usable, but HTC had the chance to push the One S well ahead of the pack by opting for 720p resolution, and in comparison the qHD that was settled upon feels just average. It’s a perfectly fine display, but nothing more than that. "

"Video capture at 1080p is generally well-focused with a good balance of color and light adjustment. The takeaway here is that the One series have superb cameras; hardware and software both ensure good-quality images were taken quickly and easily.

HTC One S Review
HTC One S Preview
The HTC One S is HTC’s latest smartphone aimed at roughly the middle of the current market, making it the middle-child of the HTC One line with the One X taking the throne of flagship device and the One V replacing the Legend as the ranking budget-offering.
For a mid-range phone the One S actually sports some pretty impressive specs. The dual-core 1.7GHz processor and 1GB of RAM should be able to handle just about any app or game currently on the Android market with relative ease.
Internal storage is 16GB, meaning that there’s plenty of room to fill it up with video and music files. This is especially handy due to the One S rocking Beats Audio sound enhancement for the musically-minded.
The 4.3 inch 960x540 display should offer crisp images, although it’s no 720pHD display like the one found on the One X. We still hope to see vibrant colours and clear tonal contrast.
The camera weighs in at a solid 8MP backed up by HTC’s BSI sensor for better low-light photos. There’s also one of HTC’s new F2.0 apertures and 28mm lenses there to further enhance the image-capture experience.
Basically the HTC One S, despite being a ‘mid-rnage’ device, actually sports more impressive specs than the upper-end of last year’s smartphone generation. We’re expecting nothing short of an impressive experience from this device and we can’t wait to tell you our thoughts once we get our hands on one.
