No one is safe: your date is judging your choice of phone

15 February 2017

"Opposites attract" is a common romantic adage, but that doesn't appear to be the case when it comes to your choice in smartphone.

A study conducted by and Research Now has found that Android owners are 15 times as likely to negatively judge a date for using an iPhone. On the other hand, iPhone owners 21 times more likely to negatively judge a potential partner touting an Android handset.

It's possible that iPhone owners are bigger jerks due to lock-in features like iMessage and FaceTime, but it certainly seems like smartphone operating systems could very well be the new Capulets and Montagues. If you're looking for love, you best check out your potential partner's smartphone *before* their looks.

While Windows Mobile was left out of the survey, it's safe to say everyone is judging anyone still on that sinking ship. Sorry. That was harsh. I don't mean it.

If you're a dude with a cracked smartphone screen, you've got even bigger problems than whether you identify with iOS or Android.'s research found that ladies are 86% more likely to take issue with a gentleman if his phone is broken. That being said, millennials care less about the state of your smartphone, at least when compared to gen X and boomers.

What a bunch of losers.

Other findings from's study included:

  • 26% of respondents said not being on social media at all is a turn on
  • 29% of respondents would appreciate it if you used your phone to actually call them
  • 50% of respondents are turned off by constant social media activity
  • 66% of respondents don't want you texting someone on a date (duh)
