Mario's smartphone debut - Super Mario Run - is now available as a free download through the iOS App Store.
Super Mario Run reimagines Nintendo's iconic franchise as one-handed experience that takes inspiration from the endless runner genre. Mario will move by himself, but players have to jump. While most endless runners feature just one "endless" map, Super Mario Run is broken up into 24 individual levels across six worlds.
Super Mario Run is free to download, but will require a one off in-app purchase of $9.99 to unlock the full game. Regardless of whether you buy the full game or not, Super Mario Run requires an active internet connection to play (either through Wi-Fi or mobile data). This is to help combat piracy.
The game was first announced during Apple's September iPhone 7 event, where Mario-creator Shigeru Miyamoto took the stage alongside the likes of Apple CEO Tim Cook. While Super Mario Run isn't Nintendo's first smartphone app, it is the company's first full-fledged smartphone game.
Super Mario Run is compatible with iPhones and iPads running iOS 8 or better. The game itself is about a 200MB download. It will also be available for Android devices, but a release date has yet to confirmed.
