verizon fios internet

Verizon was one of the first providers to market with fiber optic internet service, launching in 2005. They've since grown their FiOS (short for fiber optic service) coverage to encompass 9 states along the eastern seaboard. FiOS' plans are fairly priced given the speeds they deliver, ranging from $39.99/month for 200Mbps to $79.99/month for 1Gbps. Verizon FiOS also offers a variety of bundles and deals at any given time. Some plans are no-contract, while others require 24-month agreements.

In this guide we'll break down Verizon FiOS' speeds, prices, bundles, and reputation, capping it off with final assessment of its value compared to other providers.

Verizon FiOS fiber internet

Fiber internet is the fastest type of internet. Connections travel over cables containing thin optical fibers, so your internet literally travels at "the speed of light." Verizon FiOS continues to grow its fiber network in the U.S. To see if it's is available where you live, punch your address into our internet search engine.

FiOS is known for actually delivering—if not exceeding—their promised internet speeds. Plus, shrewd customers will pick up on the Verizon FiOS deals running at any given time.

Verizon FiOS' prices are competitively priced for the speeds they deliver—particularly next to fellow fiber providers like GFiber (formally known as Google Fiber).

A 1Gbps Verizon FiOS plan, meanwhile, costs a bit more than similar offerings from Xfinity and GFiber ($85 and $70 respectively). However, it also boasts the cheapest upfront fee—only $99. That said, you do have to shell out a $12/month rental fee for the router (unless you want to buy one from FiOS for $199.99, or bring your own).

Verizon FiOS internet reputation

Internet providers are among the most derided companies in the country, with customers complaining about everything from unexpected price jumps to slower-than-advertised speeds.

Verizon fares a bit better than many of their competitors by delivering on their promised speeds, and not imposing data caps. The biggest gripe among customers seems to be the company's less-than-knowledgeable customer service agents.

Incidentally, our Verizon FiOS customer service page lists all of the information you need to get in touch with them.

How to find your Verizon FiOS internet plan

Our internet search engine makes it easy to discover which internet plans are offered in your specific area.

Simply head over to our internet hub, punch in your address, select your preferred speed, and press "search." On the resulting page you can browse through what's available, and filter by connection type. For a shortcut, simply enter your details in the field at the bottom of this page. You can even sign up for Verizon Fios Prepaid plans which come with no contract.

Verizon FiOS Internet: The bottom line

Bottom line: Verizon FiOS delivers fast fiber internet at relatively competitive prices, without those pesky data caps. Upfront costs are low ($99) though they do charge a rental fee for their routers ($12). FiOS is known for delivering on their promised speeds—exceeding them even—so they're definitely worth a hard look if you're in the market for fiber service (and you happen to live in the northeast).

Pros
  • Fast speeds
  • No data caps
Cons
  • Router rental costs
  • Limited coverage area
