I spent just over a month on Mint Mobile’s Unlimited plan to provide a real hands-on review of the carrier’s service. I was so impressed with Mint’s coverage and speeds that I decided to leave Verizon and join Mint. I'm not the only one at WhistleOut who made the switch. My colleague, Daphne Kelly, also moved from T-Mobile to Mint for the same great coverage at a cheaper price.

Both of our experiences confirm that Mint offers affordable plans and strong coverage for us (California and Idaho). The nationwide coverage and service is top-notch; enough so that we both signed up for a whole year (or two in my case) with Mint Mobile.

Mint Mobile is a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) offering discounted service on the T-Mobile network. Mint stands out with a unique plan structure, selling prepaid service in bulk, with 3-, 6-, and 12-month packages. The larger the monthly package, the lower the monthly rate. Mint portrays itself as a solution to the big carrier's ever-increasing price rates while still providing the flexibility of an MVNO.

I’ll share my and Daphne’s experiences as Mint Mobile customers and review plan prices, data limits, speeds, and coverage to help you determine whether switching to Mint Mobile is right for you.

Why we love Mint:

After testing Mint Mobile for a month, Angelo was impressed enough to switch his personal line from Verizon. "The competitive prices, solid coverage in metro areas, and excellent data speeds made it an easy choice," he commented. Since switching, he's saved over $400 and received a free iPhone.

Daphne is a Contributing Editor specializing in the mobile industry. She has tested and reviewed major mobile carriers, MVNOs, and international eSIMS.

Daphne knew she wanted a plan on the T-Mobile network, but chose a cheaper carrier. She said, "I switched to Mint Mobile after being a T-Mobile customer for 7 years. I was paying $75/month for T-Mobile’s top-tier unlimited plan and switching to Mint lowered my monthly phone bill by $45."

How I tested Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile logo

I spent a month testing Mint Mobile's service hands-on to evaluate its performance in everyday scenarios. Spoiler: I was so impressed that I signed up for two years of unlimited data with Mint.

The features I tested included the following:

  • Sending texts and making calls in both urban and suburban areas
  • Streaming music and video using mobile data on both 5G and LTE
  • Downloading apps and files to test data speeds
  • Using the mobile hotspot for work and video calls
  • Managing accounts through Mint's app and website

The bottom line

I found Mint delivers exactly what I need: reliable coverage, fast data speeds where I spend most of my time, and significant savings compared to major carriers. The combination of strong performance and straightforward pricing was enough for me to leave Verizon and take my personal phone plan to Mint.

These same benefits also convinced my teammate, Daphne, to make the switch and renew with Mint every year.

What plans does Mint Mobile offer?

Mint Mobile offers four plans that include unlimited talk, unlimited text, and various allotments of high-speed data. All plans can be purchased in 3-month, 6-month, or 12-month packages. It’s important to note that when you sign up, you have to pay for your service upfront. For example, Mint’s 5GB plan is $25/month when you sign up for 3 months, meaning you pay $75 right away.

However, Mint is also well known for its competitive introductory offers, including 3 months of unlimited data for only $15/month, 3 months of service free with your 3-month plan, or a year of unlimited data for free when you buy a new phone. In fact, I snagged two years of Mint’s Unlimited plan for free with my new iPhone purchase.

6 months $20/mo $25/mo $35/mo $35/mo
12 months $15/mo $20/mo $25/mo $30/mo

For this review, I tested Mint's Unlimited plan, which costs $30/month at its lowest and $40/month at its highest. The unlimited data plan includes 50GB of premium data. If you exceed that allotment, Mint might slow your data down at high-traffic times when most or more people connect.

Mint's plans are pretty basic, which isn't a bad thing. In fact, the lack of frills is part of what keeps them more affordable than the major carriers’ plans. In addition to the talk, text, and data, each plan also includes mobile hotspot access, which counts against your plan's high-speed limit (on the Unlimited plan, hotspot is limited to 20GB).

You can see our full breakdown of the carrier's offerings in our guide to Mint Mobile's best plans.

Who owns Mint Mobile?

Mint Mobile is actually owned by T-Mobile, which purchased the company back in 2023. The important part is that Mint continues offering its own low-cost plans separately. This gives you T-Mobile's network quality without the premium price tag, which is what convinced me to switch from Verizon and stick with Mint long-term.

Does Mint Mobile offer family plans?

Mint Mobile helps families and friends snag cheap service with its Mint Modern Family plan. You can manage up to five lines under one account, with the primary holder paying the bill for everyone.

The key is that each line can choose its own data plan—so a light user can have 5GB while a heavy streamer might want Unlimited. You can even set up auto-renewal for payments (3 months at a time) to lock in the lowest monthly rates without paying for a full year upfront.

The youngest members of the family can have data and stay safe with parental controls through Mint Kids. This feature lets you designate any of Mint's standard plans—5GB, 15GB, 20GB, or Unlimited—as a kids line within your family account.

This way, you can monitor data usage to see exactly how much your child is using, helping you budget and keep an eye on their screen time. You'll get notifications for any plan changes, and Mint kids lines are shielded from all marketing messages, giving you complete visibility and control.

How we rated Mint Mobile: WhistleOut’s metrics

Mint Mobile logo
4.5 out of 5.0 overall

Fact-checking Mint Mobile's claims

At WhistleOut, we evaluate all carriers using five key metrics: price, value, speed, coverage, and customer service. Each metric is assigned a one-point star value, which contributes to the carrier’s overall score.

Mint Mobile's metrics were:

  •  Price: 5 out of 5
  •  Value: 4.5 out of 5
  •  Data speeds: 4.5 out of 5
  •  Coverage and network reliability: 3 out of 5
  •  Customer service: 4 out of 5

I spent over a month on Mint Mobile, testing out the carrier's services. From activating my device with an eSIM to putting its data through the ringer with constant speed tests at various times per day and in various locations, I gauged how well Mint lives up to its claims. No surprise, it was so good I made the switch permanent.

How does Mint Mobile's pricing work?

Mint Mobile's prices are definitely a standout feature. With premium data plans starting at $25/month with a 3-month package, Mint easily beats out the major carriers' rates.  To break it down, if you buy a full year of Mint Mobile service, you'll spend $360/year, which is $2,568 cheaper than the average annual cost of a phone plan from a major carrier.

Plus, Mint often runs limited-time promotional deals on devices and cell service, dropping its unlimited plans as low as $15/month. But keep in mind that these prices only apply to introductory offers and will go up after the initial term.

You can usually get free cell service when you purchase a new phone through Mint. I switched to Mint because the iPhone promotion included two years of unlimited data for free—that’s a deal too good to pass up for a new device. Although most Americans don’t need unlimited data, it is a nice safety net. There have been a few months where my usage spiked and I got decently close to the premium data allowance, so the peace of mind is worth the price.

If you find you aren’t using all your data, Mint Mobile will let you know. Mint proactively notified my colleague Daphne that she could downgrade from her initial plan based on her real usage. She commented, Mint Mobile sent me emails each month notifying me that, based on my data usage, I could switch to a cheaper plan and still have more than enough data.”

Score: 5 out of 5

Save more with a Mint Mobile annual plan

The most significant savings with Mint come from committing to a full year of service, an approach that both I and my colleague Daphne Kelly use. By paying for 12 months upfront, you lock in the lowest possible monthly rate. Plus, you don't have to worry about paying your bill at the start of every new month.

As Daphne puts it, "To take advantage of further savings, I opted for the 12-month annual plan. The best part is that I’ve been able to remove my monthly phone bill expense from my budget."

Value

In terms of value, Mint Mobile fits tons of value into its plans and helps anyone to save money on their mobile phone plan. The plans include all the essential features, like unlimited talk and text and hotspot access. Better yet, there aren’t any surprise fees you might find from a bigger carrier.

However, it's important to note that your data speeds may be deprioritized after reaching the high-speed limit on each plan. I didn’t notice any noticeable slowdowns, and my colleague, Daphne, reported the same network reliability. She noted, "Never once have I had my 5G connection drop to 4G LTE." For most users, the performance should remain consistently strong.

Score: 4.5 out of 5

How much data do I need?

The amount of data you use per month is a good indicator of how much data you’ll need in a phone plan. Most people overestimate how much data they actually use, and as a result, they overpay for enormous unlimited plans.

Check out our mobile data usage guide to learn how much data you really need in a phone plan.

How fast is Mint Mobile?

The very first thing I did after activating my Mint Mobile plan was check speeds. The results were a blazing 411Mbps on its 5G network around Irvine, which set my expectations high for my experience with Mint. Happily, those expectations were met. I never saw speeds dip down below 200Mbps, with peak speeds reaching as fast as 600Mbps. That’s plenty fast to stream videos, play games, and download large files without a hitch.

The only times I really had bandwidth issues were those rare instances in remote areas when a signal wasn't great (or non-existent).

Mint Mobile speed test results
Mint Mobile speeds remained very fast across several speed tests.
Image: Angelo Ilumba | WhistleOut

One of Mint's biggest strengths is its 5G speeds, but your actual signal strength and speed depend on your specific location. I tested in Irvine, California, and consistently saw top-tier speeds between 400Mbps and 600Mbps. But that experience isn't universal. Daphne got consistent but more modest speeds in Boise, around 58Mbps. It's plenty fast for everything she needs, but it shows that while Mint’s coverage is nationwide, your signal and speeds will definitely vary.

Score: 4.5 out of 5

How good is Mint's coverage and reliability?

Mint Mobile coverage map
Image: Mint Mobile

Mint Mobile’s coverage area is the same as   T-Mobile's network, which is a big deal if you're in a city or suburb. Why? Because T-Mobile really shines in urban areas. On top of that, you're also getting access to the largest 5G network in the country.

From my experience, the coverage was pretty solid in my neck of the woods—a bustling suburb in Southern California. Whether I was streaming music, hopping on a video call, or just browsing, the connection was smooth, fast, and reliable. It felt good knowing I could count on my phone to keep up with my day-to-day.

That said, Mint's coverage wasn’t all perfect. I did hit a few snags when venturing into a more remote spot nearby. A couple of dead zones here and there reminded me that we're still talking about a carrier that's better suited for city life. By contrast, my last phone on Verizon’s network was getting consistent service across my areas, suburban and remote.

Mint still held up on road trips, though. On a cross-country trip to New Orleans, coverage was never an issue. From the lively French Quarter to those busy business districts, my Mint service was hanging in there like a champ. Full bars, fast data, and no hiccups. I even took my plan to Europe with a Minternational pass for global roaming. It worked like a charm and kept me connected overseas.

Score: 3 out of 5

International coverage and roaming with Mint

Mint's global roaming passes provide talk, text, and high-speed data in over 180 international destinations, using T-Mobile's same roaming agreements (you can check to see if your destination is covered here). You'll get either 4G or 5G coverage, depending on what's available in your country.

Daphne tested Mint's international plan offerings while exploring Europe and found the 10-day pass was just the right amount of data, talk, and text to use Google Maps and talk to family back home.

Customer service

Image: Angelo Ilumba and Daphne Kelly | WhistleOut

Reaching out to Mint Mobile's customer service was more about seeing how they handled initial contact rather than solving complex problems. I tried their online chat and phone support. Mint was quick to respond each time, so I was pretty satisfied.

Still, it's important to note that since I didn't have any real issues to present, my interaction with Mint's customer service was somewhat limited. This means my experience might not cover the full spectrum of what Mint Mobile's support team can—or can’t—handle. So, while they were fast and responsive in my basic tests, keep in mind that this is just a surface-level assessment.

How do you activate a Mint Mobile plan?

Mint Mobile eSIM activation
eSIM activation with Mint is easy
Image: Angelo Ilumba | WhistleOut

Mint Mobile offers an eSIM option for quick and immediate activation, a great timesaver if your phone supports the technology. This means you can activate your service instantly, bypassing the need for a physical SIM card. However, if a physical SIM card is more your style, or your phone just doesn't support eSIM, Mint Mobile will send you a SIM card and kit for free.

In my case, I opted for the eSIM setup, and the experience was seamless. The Mint Mobile app guided me through each step with clarity and precision. It’s a straightforward, no-fuss process, especially convenient if you'd rather not wait for a physical SIM card in the mail. I go more in-depth in our guide to activating Mint Mobile service if you need more help to activate a Mint plan.

For those who choose a physical SIM, Mint Mobile ensures the activation process is just as smooth. Once the SIM card arrives, you can activate it through the Mint Mobile tool on the Mint website, which offers an intuitive and user-friendly experience.

Managing my Mint plan

Mint Mobile makes managing your plan a breeze. For instance, you can make changes to your account and view or pay bills through the Mint website once you log in. You can also check data usage, adjust settings, and update personal information there. The Mint Mobile wallet even lets you preload funds for international passes and data extras as well. All of this is also accessible in an easy-to-use Mint Mobile app.

I did use the app to keep track of my high-speed data usage. Mint makes this extremely easy because your remaining high-speed data for the month is the first thing you see when opening the app.

You can easily renew your plan through the Mint Mobile app too.. You don’t need to worry about forgetting to renew either, since Mint sends text-message reminders starting five days before your plan expires.

Did I like the Unlimited plan?

Coming from one of the major carriers, it was a breath of fresh air to experience this plan at such a comparably low price. Three months of service with Mint is only slightly more than what I paid for a single month with Verizon.

Data allotment

As for those 50GB of premium data, it’s difficult to come close to reaching that allowance. Depending on your personal mobile habits, you can choose the right data allowance for your lifestyle. Plus, Mint will let you know if you can get away with less data each month.

Tello offers cheap, low-data plans

If you realize you need a plan with lower data allotments, you may find cheaper options from carriers like Tello Mobile. It also uses the T-Mobile network, but its 10GB plan is only $15/month and allows you to pay one month at a time.

Check out our Mint vs. Tello guide for more information.

Mobile hotspot

Backed by the very fast speeds I was getting with Mint, using mobile was pretty seamless. It was fast and could support me in getting some work done away from my home network.

The biggest downside to Mint Mobile was the hotspot data allowance. Unfortunately, Mint has a  20GB hotspot limit that also counts against your premium data total.

Streaming video

With the ultra-fast speeds you can get with Mint, you'd think streaming video wouldn't be an issue. As far as being able to get into the weeds of a YouTube rabbit hole, there weren't any problems with loading and buffering.

However, Mint's unlimited plan limits video playback quality to 480p (standard definition), which isn't great. Still, even with this limit, I was able to watch some 4K video without any issues.

How does Mint Mobile compare to other MVNOs?

Visible and US Mobile stand as two of Mint's biggest competitors. Each offers unlimited plans that are comparable to Mint's in value, but there are some notable differences.

Mint Mobile vs. Visible Wireless

Visible+ offers a plan for $35/month, which is $5 cheaper than Mint's 3-month standard rate. Visible+ users have access to unlimited premium data and unlimited mobile hotspot data at 10Mbps. While Mint Mobile also offers a significant 20GB for hotspot usage, the unlimited aspect from Visible+ is particularly appealing for those with high tethering needs. Another key difference is the network; Visible+ operates exclusively on Verizon's network, which can be a major advantage in areas where Verizon offers better coverage than T-Mobile.

Visible+ is a potentially more attractive option for users who want more premium data, unlimited hotspot usage, and possibly better network coverage in their area. But if you want a better introductory price and the T-Mobile network is strong where you are, Mint is a solid option.

Check out Mint Mobile vs. Visible to see a full breakdown of plans, pricing, and coverage.

Mint Mobile vs. US Mobile

US Mobile's Unlimited Starter Plan comes in $15 cheaper than Mint at $25/month, and includes a whopping 70GB of premium data. The hotspot allowance half of Mint's at 10GB.

However, US Mobile presents a unique value proposition with its choice of network between T-Mobile, AT&T, or Verizon, giving you the best choice of the network that is strongest in your area.

US Mobile's unlimited plan is more affordable than Mint's, and offers more full-speed data. It could be a good option for those who want flexibility in their choice of network without breaking the bank.

Mint Mobile vs. other carriers

I chose Visible and US Mobile for a more in-depth comparison against Mint Mobile since their plan offerings are similar. But if you want to see how Mint stacks up against the Big 3 and other MVNOs, check out our reviews below:

Recap: Would I recommend Mint Mobile?

I would totally recommend a Mint Mobile cell phone plan to anybody looking to save on their monthly bill without feeling like they are downgrading service. So much so that I am sticking with Mint and don’t plan on leaving for a long time. After spending a month with Mint Mobile, it's clear that the carrier stands as an intriguing option in the mobile market, especially for anyone who prioritizes affordability and quality.

Mint Mobile’s unique approach to plans and pricing, where longer commitments mean greater savings, is a big draw for budget-conscious users.

Switching to Mint Mobile's service is right for you if:

  1. You live in an area with strong T-Mobile coverage
  2. Mobile hotspot isn't a priority for you
  3. You can commit to a longer plan for bigger savings

And even if you're not quite sure, with its 7-day money-back guarantee, it's worth giving Mint Mobile a try. Who knows, you might just save yourself a pretty penny on your mobile bill.
