I've rotated between navigation apps more times than I'd like to admit, but Waze is always the one I reach for on a long highway drive, specifically because its crowdsourced alert system catches problems faster than any other app I've tested.

Do you have enough data?

Waze uses less mobile data than most navigation apps, but it still needs a connection. T-Mobile MVNO carriers offer strong nationwide coverage at a lower monthly price, so you've always got a signal when the app needs to pull live traffic data.

What is Waze?

Waze is a free, community-powered navigation app that uses real-time reports from millions of active drivers to flag traffic, accidents, police, road hazards, and closures along your route. It's available on iOS and Android, has no subscription cost, and automatically reroutes you when it detects congestion ahead.

Real-time alerts and rerouting

The core of Waze is its reporting network. Drivers submit alerts for accidents, stalled vehicles, police positions, road debris, and weather hazards as they encounter them. Waze aggregates those reports and adjusts your route automatically when it detects that the incident is slowing traffic on your current path. You see the notification before you hit the slowdown, not after.

Speed checks are flagged in real time, too, which is handy on long stretches of unfamiliar highway.

Waze vs. Google Maps: What's different

Google Maps has absorbed some of Waze's core features over the years, including police alerts and incident reporting, which is why many drivers have switched to Google Maps as their default and deleted Waze.

That said, Waze still has a stronger reporting culture among its user base, meaning incident data tends to be more granular and faster on the ground. If you're driving through high-traffic corridors, running both apps together isn't a bad call, with Waze handling live alerts and Google Maps serving as the backup route reference.

For pure navigation on well-traveled routes, they perform comparably. For real-time situational awareness on a long highway drive, Waze still has a clear edge.

Waze uses less data than you'd expect

Our testing shows Waze uses less mobile data than both Google Maps and Apple Maps over equivalent routes. That gap matters on a long road trip where navigation runs continuously for hours.

Even on a modest data plan, Waze won't chew through your monthly allotment over a long weekend drive. See Waze alongside four other road trip essentials in our guide to the best road trip apps.

Waze FAQ

Is Waze free?

Yes, Waze is completely free on both iOS and Android with no premium tier or subscription required.

Does Waze work without cell service?

Waze requires a live data connection for its real-time traffic and alert features. Without a signal, the app can't pull crowdsourced reports or reroute you around incidents.

Is Waze still better than Google Maps?

For real-time community reporting and incident alerts, Waze still has a more active reporting culture. For general navigation and points of interest, Google Maps is more comprehensive. Both are worth having on a long road trip.

Does Waze work internationally?

Yes, Waze works in most countries worldwide, though the quality of crowdsourced data depends on the size of the Waze community in a given region. Coverage is strongest in North America and Western Europe.
