New Hamshire is known for its quaint towns and picturesque wilderness. From its rocky coastline to the high peaks of the White Mountains, New Hampshire offers a surprising variety of landscapes for a state so small. It is the nation's fifth-smallest state covering just 9,350 square miles of territory.

For a smaller state, New Hampshire is surprisingly limited when it comes to phone service. In fact, it offers one of the smallest 5G coverage areas in the entire nation. The main reason for these limits is New Hampshire's aforementioned beautiful countryside. It's great to look at, but horrible for phone service. Still, we’ve compared coverage maps and discovered you can find some kind of service from at least one carrier in almost every part of the state. However, if you like to venture into northern New Hampshire, you may struggle to find a signal.

WhistleOut's coverage check feature shows what signal strength is like at your current location. Type in your address and we do the rest. In addition to showing you a map of your area with the coverage from the major carriers, we filter through the available cell phone plans and present only those from carriers who provide good reception at your location.

Whether you’re considering moving to New Hampshire or are a native of the Granite State, let’s see who has the best 4G LTE and 5G coverage.

About phone coverage in New Hampshire

Best cell phone coverage in New Hampshire title=

New Hampshire and its neighbor Vermont are a bit unique in terms of phone service. Typically, smaller states offer better phone coverage because there's not as much territory for carriers to cover. However, that's not the case for New Hampshire and Vermont. Their rural mountainous areas make that kind of coverage impossible as rolling hills and trees make it difficult for phone signals to travel very far. For New Hampshire specifically, carriers have done a pretty good job of spreading 4G LTE signal to all but the most remote corners of the state. On the other hand, 5G coverage is a different story with the state having one of the smallest footprints on the East Coast.

Verizon offers the strongest overall coverage in New Hampshire. It includes a strong signal in urban areas and covers a large amount of rural territory. That said, Verizon also has the smallest 5G network and offers virtually no 5G signal outside of urban areas. T-Mobile offers the largest 5G network with a solid signal in urban areas, but it struggles overall in rural areas. AT&T offers excellent rural 4G LTE coverage with a footprint just slightly smaller than Verizon. Its 5G coverage area is slightly larger than Verizon's (by territory size), but it is limited to the southeastern part of the state.

Why it's important to pick the right coverage

Most of New Hampshire's urban areas have excellent phone service. That said, you need a network and plan that will cover you both in the cities and wherever you travel.

View Plans in New Hampshire

Verizon is the overall leader in 4G LTE coverage in New Hampshire. Just behind is AT&T with T-Mobile pulling up the rear. On the other hand, T-Mobile is the undisputed king of 5G coverage, followed by AT&T and Verizon respectively.

What we love
  • Solid 4G LTE coverage across state
  • Verizon 5G coverage in virtually all cities
  • T-Mobile 5G includes some rural areas
  • Verizon 4G LTE includes rural areas in northern New Hampshire
What could be improved
  • Verizon 5G is limited to pockets around cities like Concord
  • AT&T 5G service only stretches from coastline to Manchester
  • Small T-Mobile dead zones throughout the state

Verizon has the largest 4G LTE network in New Hampshire reaching 89.58% of the state. It's followed closely by AT&T's 4G LTE network which covers 84.4%. Finally, T-Mobile's 4G LTE network brings up the rear with a respectable 69.63% of the state. Don't worry if these figures sound a little low. Most of the areas with no coverage are rural regions where not many people live. The populated areas of New Hampshire have excellent 4G LTE coverage.

With 5G networks, T-Mobile is in the lead offering coverage to 56.94% of New Hampshire. Generally, if you have a signal with T-Mobile, there's a great chance it'll be 5G. AT&T and Verizon don't come close with their 5G networks covering just 11.63% and 9.57% of the state respectively. That said, just because T-Mobile is in the lead doesn't always mean it's the best. Much of T-Mobile's 5G infrastructure is made up of low-band towers. These signals can travel farther, offering more coverage, but they're only slightly faster than 4G LTE.

Just remember, numbers only tell part of the story. You’ll need to investigate the coverage in your neighborhood or the part of New Hampshire you plan on traveling to. Verizon network coverage in New Hampshire

Verizon is the nationwide leader in 4G LTE coverage and offers the largest coverage area in New Hampshire. With service covering 89.58% of the state, you'll likely find a signal in all but the most remote locations.

With 5G coverage, Verizon leaves a lot to be desired. Its 5G network only covers 9.57% of the state and is mainly clustered around cities like Concord, Manchester, and Lebanon.  The carrier offers incredibly fast 5G speeds, but its network infrastructure remains limited. Still, urban areas and cities are where most people in New Hampshire live, so the majority of people living in the state have great service at home. Once you leave town you'll struggle to find a 5G signal.

Best Verizon phone plan

Verizon is a great choice for mobile service for the urbanites of New Hampshire. Verizon's best plan overall is the Unlimited Plus plan. It includes unlimited talk, text, and an unlimited allotment of premium high-speed data. There’s also a 30GB mobile hotspot with 5G speeds. Plus, you can sign up for various optional perks like the Disney Bundle or an extra 100GB of hotspot data for just $10/month each.

Best phone plans on Verizon's network

While Verizon offers solid 4G LTE coverage and blisteringly fast 5G, its plans are some of the most expensive on the market once you start adding perks. Luckily, Verizon’s network is also served by some of the best MVNOs, so you can get access on the cheap. MVNOs are smaller carriers that sell discounted access to the big carrier networks. Your signal and coverage are exactly the same, but they typically don't offer as many perks, so you'll pay a lot less for your plan.

The best Verizon MVNO is Visible. It offers two unlimited data plans, including a $25/month option with unlimited talk, text, and data. Plus, Visible offers an unlimited mobile hotspot with speeds capped at 5Mbps. That's plenty fast enough for basic internet tasks like browsing or HD streaming.

US Mobile is another great MVNO with access to Verizon's network. It also offers service on T-Mobile's network and AT&T's network, so you’ll get service with the one that is strongest at your home. There are plenty of plans to choose from, including shared data plans and two excellent unlimited options. If you need a plan with a ton of data, US Mobile's top-tier plan offers unlimited premium data with a gobsmacking 50GB mobile hotspot allotment for $44/month. Getting that much hotspot data from an MVNO is incredibly rare. Plus, buying a family plan with three or more Unlimited Premium lines gets you a subscription perk and multi-line discount.

AT&T network coverage in New Hampshire

AT&T offers the second-largest 4G LTE network in New Hampshire covering 84.4% of the state. It covers most of the same area as Verizon but offers just a little less coverage in the northern part of the state along the border with Canada.

The AT&T 5G network covers just 11.63% of the state. If you spend most of your time in the southeastern part of New Hampshire near the coast or along the I-95 corridor, you'll likely never lose a 5G signal. Unlike Verizon, which offers splotchy 5G signal in cities across the state, AT&T has concentrated all of its 5G coverage in southeastern New Hampshire, essentially stretching from Concord to the coastline. In this region, you'll have a consistent 5G signal, but you'll have no 5G service in any other part of the state.

Best AT&T phone plan

AT&T’s footprint makes it a solid option for wireless service in New Hampshire. The top AT&T cell phone plan is its Premium 2.0 option starting at $90/month. It includes unlimited talk, text, and truly unlimited premium high-speed data. Plus, there's also a massive 100GB allotment of mobile hotspot data.

Best phone plans on AT&T's network

If you to use AT&T’s massive 4G LTE and 5G networks, but don't want to pay top dollar, there are plenty of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) that help you save. These small carriers offer discounted access to the big carrier networks, so you'll enjoy the same reliable service at much lower costs.

Our favorite AT&T MVNO is Cricket Wireless. It offers several plans that are perfect for any budget. Its top option is an unlimited plan with perks like HBO Max with ads and 150GB of cloud storage for $55/month. Very few MVNOs offer streaming perks (AT&T doesn't even offer them anymore), so Cricket is a great choice on that front. That said, it's owned directly by AT&T, so it doesn’t offer some of the deep discounts that other MVNOs can. However, its partnership does allow for more perks and access to Cricket stores all over the country.

As a percentage of the total state population, New Hampshire has one of the largest senior populations in the county. The 2020 census found that around 20% of New Hampshire residents are over the age of 65. For these seniors, Consumer Cellular is a good choice because it offers an AARP discount. You’ll also get J.D. Power award-winning customer service and several plans to pick from. One of the best plans for average data users is the Unlimited Talk, Text, and 5GB data plan for $25/month.

T-Mobile network coverage in New Hampshire

T-Mobile's 4G LTE network is in third place, both in New Hampshire and nationwide. That said, third place doesn't necessarily mean bad coverage. T-Mobile offers 4G LTE coverage to 69.63% of the state. You'll really only struggle to find service around the White Mountains and in the northern part of the state. If you rarely go to these areas, T-Mobile is still a great choice.

On the other hand, T-Mobile dominates with its 5G network. It hammers the competition covering 56.94% of New Hampshire. The carrier's 4G LTE and 5G networks essentially overlap. In most cases, if you have a 5G-capable device and a T-Mobile signal, you'll be on the 5G network. That said, remember that many of T-Mobile's towers in rural areas use low-band 5G to provide coverage. These signals travel farther but don't offer the full promise of 5G. You'll generally only get speeds slightly faster than 4G LTE in rural areas.

T-Mobile's coverage is solid in urban areas. That said, there are dead zones scattered throughout the state.

Best T-Mobile phone plans

The top T-Mobile plan is Experience More. It offers unlimited talk, text, and unlimited premium data. Plus, there are extra perks like a 60GB mobile hotspot, Netflix and Apple TV+ subscriptions, 4K streaming, and access to T-Mobile’s “New in Two” early phone upgrade program. That said, it is one of the most costly plans on the market starting at $85/month.

Don't want to pay full price for T-Mobile coverage? There are also excellent T-Mobile prepaid plans and you can snag a multi-line discount with a T-Mobile family plan. We also recommend bundling T-Mobile phone and internet service for great cost-cutting if you're eligible for T-Mobile 5G Home internet.
