It's official: Apple has launched its first foldable phone, the iPhone Duo, and spoiler alert, it's better than I expected. I've been carrying a Galaxy Z Fold5 for two and a half years, and I've loved it, so I wasn't sure what to expect with Apple's take on the form factor.
Early rumors pointed to a foldable with dimensions close to the Galaxy Z Fold8, and those rumors had me worried that Apple was going to build an expensive copycat. But after watching the keynote, I'm happy to report that Apple came out swinging with something way more ambitious.
The iPhone Duo shows up with the largest display Apple has put on an iPhone, a redesigned iOS built for two screens, and a $1,999 starting price, so it's worth unpacking exactly what Apple built and who this phone is for.
iPhone Duo price and release date
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999, or $83.29 per month for 24 months, and comes in Star White and Night Sky. Apple Upgrade, the leasing program run through Klarna, starts as low as $57.99 per month on a 24-month term.
Pre-orders open at 5 a.m. PT on October 16 in more than 70 countries, and phones ship October 23, and 28 more countries follow on October 30.
What is the iPhone Duo?

The iPhone Duo is Apple's first foldable iPhone, and uses a book-style folding design. Closed, you get a 5.4-inch Super Retina XDR outer display that Apple says delivers more than 90% of the screen area of an iPhone 18 Pro.
When opened, the 7.6-inch inner display is 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the phone measures 5.2mm thick, making it thinner than the 5.6mm iPhone Air and the thinnest iPhone Apple has ever built. Closed, it measures 11.3mm, thicker than the new iPhone 18 Pro but still decently thin.
The A20 Pro chip inside is the same silicon Apple put in the iPhone 18 Pro, and storage starts at 256GB, with 512GB, 1TB, and 2TB options above that.

Apple smartly gave the inner and outer displays the same aspect ratio, so your content scales instead of rearranging itself when you open or close the phone.
Here's why it matters. My Fold5 has a narrow outer screen and a more square inner screen, so opening the phone in the middle of an article rearranges all the text and I lose my place.
Both the Duo's displays are Super Retina XDR panels with ProMotion up to 120Hz and 3,000 nits of peak brightness, so reading outside shouldn't be a struggle. The inner display adds a nano-texture finish to cut glare, and that matte surface does double duty by hiding the crease better than a glossy screen would.
iPhone Duo battery life and charging
Apple puts one battery on each side of the iPhone Duo and uses energy rebalancing algorithms to run them as a single unit. Apple claims up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display, up to 44 hours on the outer display, and up to 24 hours of typical use when both screens get equal time.
Big inner displays drain foldables fast, and that's a tradeoff I've accepted for two and a half years. But a battery system built specifically around a phone with two screens is a huge improvement in the foldable phone space.
Charging keeps up, too: The Duo's fast charging hits 50% in around 20 minutes wired or around 30 minutes on a MagSafe or Qi2 charger. A phone with two batteries could easily have been slow to recharge, so getting to half a charge over a lunch break is really exciting.
iOS 27 on the iPhone Duo

Apple rebuilt iOS 27 around a folding phone. Everything from the Lock Screen controls to the Dock and app navigation moves to the side of the screen, freeing up vertical space for whatever you're actually looking at. Moving everything to the side also makes one-handed use a lot easier, since your thumb won't have to stretch as far.
iOS 27 also reacts to how you're holding the phone. Content reorients when you turn it sideways, switches to the right display when you flip it over, and adjusts as you fold it. StandBy also works on either display now, even when the phone isn't charging. So you can set the iPhone Duo down and use it as a clock, a photo frame, or a place to keep your widgets.
Split View is also an exciting new feature in iOS 27, and it lets you run two apps side by side on an iPhone for the first time. Apple also got Netflix, Zoom, and Slack to build for the iPhone Duo before launch, so the App Store should catch up faster than it did on Android.
Software is where foldables usually fall apart, so iOS 27 launching with all of this built in is the most encouraging news about the iPhone Duo.
iPhone Duo camera features

The iPhone Duo has a 48MP Dual Fusion system with a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide on the back, plus a 12MP Center Stage front camera and an under-display camera behind the inner screen.
The Fusion Main shoots at 24MP by default, gives you 2x optical-quality zoom cropped from the sensor, and records video at up to 4K 120 fps in Dolby Vision. Apple also added texture and grain controls to Photographic Styles, so you can dial in a film look without touching the color.
The interesting part is what Apple built on top of the folding design:
- Smart Take uses on-device software to take the picture when it sees everyone posing, so you don't have to race a timer to get into your own family photos.
- Duo Preview puts a live preview on the outer display so your subject can check their framing before you shoot.
- Kid Cue plays animations on the outer screen to pull a toddler's eyes toward the lens.
- Duo FaceTime lets someone standing next to you join a call on the outer display instead of crowding into frame.
- Rear-camera selfies let you shoot with the higher-resolution back cameras and frame the shot on the outer display.
Should you buy the iPhone Duo?
The iPhone Duo is the first foldable I'd recommend to someone who has never wanted one. In the past, foldables have asked buyers to accept a visible crease, weak dust resistance, awkward screen transitions, and apps that don't fit, and Apple addressed most of that list on its first attempt.
Anyone already deep in Android and carrying a recent Fold has less reason to move, especially given the camera gap against the Z Fold8 Ultra. But if you've spent the last few years watching foldables from a distance and waiting for the category to stop feeling like an experiment, I would definitely say the Apple Duo is one to watch as early user reviews start coming in.
