I downloaded Finch expecting a gimmick and ended up looking forward to opening it every morning. The premise is simple: you take care of a virtual bird by taking care of yourself. Complete a real-world self-care goal, and your Finch gets energy, accessories, and the ability to explore a virtual world. It sounds cute. It is cute. It also works surprisingly well as a daily habit-building tool.

Finch is one of my top picks from the best mental health apps for anyone who struggles to make self-care feel worthwhile.

How Finch works

Finch is a self-care pet app where you set personal wellness goals and earn energy points for your virtual bird each time you complete one. Goals can be anything from drinking a glass of water or taking a five-minute walk to calling a friend or practicing a breathing exercise. The bird grows, gains accessories, and explores new virtual locations as you accumulate points and rainbow stones over time.

Not sure how to update your apps?

Keeping your apps up to date ensures you're always getting the latest features, bug fixes, and security improvements. Learn how to update the apps on your iPhone and your Android. It takes less time than you think.

You can add the Finch widget to your phone's home screen, which keeps the bird visible as a daily reminder without requiring you to open the app. That passive visibility is a subtle but effective nudge. Seeing your bird waiting for you makes it harder to ignore your daily goals.

The self-care goals are yours to define

One of Finch's best design decisions is that you set your own goals rather than following a preset program. The app offers prompts and suggestions, but the flexibility to define what self-care looks like for you makes the habit feel personal rather than prescriptive.

Goals I used during testing included three deep breaths before checking my phone in the morning, a ten-minute walk, and spending five minutes journaling. None of these are groundbreaking self-care insights. But Finch's reward loop made me actually do them consistently for the first time in a long while. The gamification adds just enough external motivation to bridge the gap between knowing what's good for you and doing it.

The free version is generous

Finch's free tier gives you full access to the main self-care tracking and pet features. The $9.99/month subscription adds more customization options, accessories, and premium features, but the free version is complete enough. For most users, there's no strong reason to upgrade unless you want more ways to personalize your bird's appearance and habitat.

How I tested Finch WhistleOut logo

  • Set up personalized daily self-care goals and used the app for four consecutive weeks
  • Added the Finch home screen widget to evaluate its effectiveness as a passive daily reminder
  • Compared habit completion rate during Finch use versus weeks without the app
  • Evaluated the reward mechanics and whether the gamification created lasting motivation

Finch FAQs

What is Finch app used for?

Finch is a gamified self-care app that helps you build daily wellness habits by tying real-world tasks to a virtual pet you care for. The bird grows and earns rewards as you complete your goals.

Is Finch app free?

Yes, Finch is free to download and use. The optional subscription adds premium customization features, but the app is fully functional without paying.

Is Finch good for mental health?

Finch is a helpful tool for building daily self-care routines and maintaining motivation, but it's a habit-building app, not a clinical mental health tool. It works best alongside other wellness practices.

Can you use Finch with other mental health apps?

Yes, Finch pairs well with other tools on this list. You could use it to track and reward the habit of opening Headspace every morning, for example, making it a complement to rather than a replacement for dedicated meditation or therapy apps.
