I've written dozens of wireless guides on switching phone plans, covering everything from finding the best pricing to analyzing networks and data allotments. However, one element of plan shopping that often gets ignored is when to actually shop around and take advantage of the best deals.
Most people try to switch phone plans right at the end of their current billing period. That usually means you're frantically Googling new plans just before your carrier charges you for another month of service, leaving you no time to make a good decision. Unfortunately, that short period is limiting your options for finding the best deals.
While major carriers rarely adjust their plan prices (except to raise them), MVNOs love to offer deals. It's not unusual to find discounts offering up to 50% off the standard plan price. The problem is that these deals are usually time-limited or tied to specific holiday seasons. If your current plan doesn't end around one of these times, you may feel like you've missed the opportunity to save, but that's not actually true.

Smartphones and wireless plans are some of the most important pieces of technology in most people's lives, but you probably don't think about them until your plan is too expensive or it's time to upgrade to the newest phone. Unfortunately, that means you miss a lot of interesting and important stuff that can affect your life and wallet. Here's the big wireless shopping secret you may not realize: You don't have to switch carriers the day you buy a new phone plan. In fact, many carriers build in a minimum 30-day activation window for new customers. That means you may be able to buy a plan on sale weeks before your current phone plan runs out, then switch whenever the timing works best for you.
Here's how to hack your wireless carrier's timing and save:
- Give yourself at least 30 days to shop for a new phone plan before your current billing period ends
- Identify multiple carriers you're interested in based on pricing, coverage, and plan features
- Check on plan pricing once a week or create an account to have new deals emailed directly to your inbox
- When you find a good deal, double-check the carrier's activation terms to make sure they line up with the end of your current billing period
- Buy the discounted plan, but don't switch until your current plan is about to end
I've personally used this tactic to help score limited-time deals on my phone service, including during my most recent switch. I was on a discounted annual Ultra Mobile plan for the past year. While I liked Ultra Mobile overall, it didn't offer an extension on that lower pricing, and since I refuse to pay full price for a wireless plan, I decided it was time to find a new carrier.
My plan was due to run out in late August, so I started shopping around in July. At that time, US Mobile was offering a massive summer sale with the annual Unlimited Starter plan for just $199 (which breaks down to $16.58/month). Unlimited Starter normally costs $25/month, so I basically got a 33% discount and saved $101 over the course of a year just by shopping early.
US Mobile has a 90-day activation period, which is one of the most generous on the market. Since my Ultra Mobile plan expired in late August, I had plenty of time to shop and activate my new plan. I scored a major discount from US Mobile weeks before my plan ended and was able to use almost every day that I paid for on Ultra.
While 30 days is generally the average activation minimum, there is some variation depending on your carrier. Here are some of the activation windows for popular MVNOs:
- Tello offers 30 days
- Visible offers 30 days
- Mint Mobile offers 45 days
- Boost Mobile offers 60 days
- US Mobile offers 90 days
Other carriers may offer more or fewer days. Always double-check the activation terms to make sure you won't get charged early, because some carriers aren't as generous with this practice. Additionally, a few carriers also offer different terms depending on whether you're bringing your current phone or buying a new one from their store. Remember, if you time this wrong, you may have to switch early or forfeit the plan entirely, so always check before you buy.
The other thing to keep in mind is that this tactic can be more difficult with an eSIM. If you choose that route, most carriers will push you to download their app and begin the activation process immediately after purchase, so make sure to avoid doing that until you're actually ready to switch.
