T-Mobile T-Mix custom plan promise.
The new T-Mix plans offer custom perks.

T-Mobile is driving the wireless industry insane. The carrier changed its plans and features only a couple of months ago, lowering plan value and extending installment plan terms to lock customers in for longer periods. And now, here we are again, with T-Mobile introducing a brand-new slate of plans to replace the ones it just changed. Unfortunately, these plans are also so confusing that customers may not actually realize they’ve lost a ton of perks and value.

T-Mix is framed as an attempt to give customers more customization. T-Mobile has created a new perk system that directly corresponds with the plan you select and how many lines you have. The carrier gives you a number of “picks” based on its calculation of how valuable your account is, and then you get to choose how to spend them.

However, this new system hides a pretty simple truth: Many of these perks were previously available for free under the old plans, and the prices haven’t actually gone down that much despite each plan including fewer features. In fact, family plans are more expensive, and single-line customers will generally have to choose between getting device deals and regular perks. Many customers will simply not have enough picks to do both.

T-Mix is a price hike disguised as perk customization. T-Mobile was the last major carrier to offer a list of premium perks with its plans, and with this change, the days of major carriers saying “buy this plan, get this list of free perks” are officially done.

What is T-Mix by T-Mobile?

T-Mobile T-Mix plan lineup and optional perks

T-Mix is T-Mobile’s newest plan lineup that includes a customizable perk structure. Depending on your plan and the number of lines you have, you’ll unlock picks that can be spent on things like streaming perks, Delta SkyMiles, T-Satellite, and device promotions such as trade-in deals.

Based on pricing and data allotments, these plans are pretty similar to the Essentials and Experience 2.0 plans. There are three T-Mix plans:

  • Standard starting at $55/month
  • More starting at $75/month
  • Loaded starting at $95/month

Choosing your own perks is where the T-Mix plans get confusing. As I mentioned, T-Mobile hands out picks based on your plan and number of lines. The perks themselves also cost different numbers of picks, and you can choose to spend them on partner services or T-Mobile plan benefits.

According to T-Mobile, here’s how many picks each perk costs:

Partner Picks

  • 1 Pick: Apple TV (1 Pick through June 2027), DashPass by DoorDash, 500 miles/month through Delta SkyMiles, Google AI Plus, Hulu (with Ads), Netflix Standard with ads, Pandora Plus, Paramount+ Essential, SiriusXM All Access (App Only), YouTube Premium Lite
  • 2 Picks: Apple Music Individual, Google AI Pro, Pandora Premium, XBOX Game Pass Premium, YouTube Premium
  • 3 Picks: Netflix Standard, XBOX Game Pass Ultimate
  • 4 Picks: ESPN Unlimited plan, Netflix Premium

T-Mobile Picks

  • 1 Pick: T-Satellite, Optimized Video Calling (included with T-Mix Loaded)
  • 1–3 Picks per line: Device Promotions

Wait, how on earth does this actually work?

Let’s put this into practice and say you’re on a two-line More plan for $130/month, which will give you four picks to spend on perks.

A streaming service like Hulu with Ads costs one pick, while Netflix Standard costs three picks. Getting both would take up all four of your picks. On the other hand, ESPN Unlimited costs four picks right off the bat, so if you want that, you get no other perks.

Now, if you noticed the sneaky bullet point at the bottom of the list, you also saw that device deals cost you a number of picks. That’s right: trade-in deals and switching deals are no longer included as a standard feature of being on the right plan. Instead, if you want to cash in on a T-Mobile trade-in deal and score a new smartphone, you may have to surrender your streaming perks entirely.

The number of picks each phone deal costs depends on the model you want.

  • Budget devices like a Samsung Galaxy A-series phone or Moto G would generally cost 1 pick.
  • Mid-range devices like a standard iPhone, Google Pixel, or Samsung Galaxy S would generally cost 2 picks.
  • Premium devices like an iPhone Pro, Pixel Pro, or Galaxy Ultra would cost 3 picks.

Using the same two-line More plan example from above, you could spend those four picks on two new iPhone 17s. Just remember that making that choice means you get no other perks for your $130/month price.

T-Mix is a bad value because you get less for your money

If the new system’s quirks irritated you, this is the part that will probably make you furious. When you compare T-Mix to the free perks included on T-Mobile’s old Experience plans, there is simply no way for most customers to qualify for a comparable deal.

A single line on Experience Beyond 2.0 was $100/month. A theoretical customer who took advantage of all its perks would get T-Satellite, Netflix Standard with ads, discounted Apple TV for $3/month, Hulu, and a new iPhone 17 deal included in that $100 price. That would essentially cost six picks under the new system. Unfortunately, one line on T-Mix Loaded for $95/month only offers three picks, meaning you’ve lost half your perks for a $5 discount.

Experience More 2.0 is the same situation. For $85/month, a customer could get Netflix Standard with ads, discounted Apple TV for $3/month, and a new iPhone 17 deal, which would cost four picks under the new system. However, the T-Mix More plan is $75/month and offers just two picks for one line, meaning anyone who wants a new mid-range phone will have to choose between streaming perks and device deals. They cannot have both.

The only way for most customers on T-Mix to unlock enough picks for both streaming perks and device deals is with a family plan. The bad news is all of the three- and four-line family plans are actually more expensive on T-Mix, and some families may not have enough picks for both streaming and device deals anyway. Yes, you read that correctly.

A four-line T-Mix Loaded plan is $240/month, which is $25/month more expensive than four lines of Experience Beyond. While single-line plans get fewer perks and a small discount, T-Mobile’s family plans are actually more expensive than ever.

So, what is the solution here? If you’re on one of T-Mobile’s old plans, you should stay grandfathered on it for as long as possible. For people considering switching to T-Mobile, the easy answer is to pick an MVNO instead.

Perks and device deals are what have locked customers into major carriers like T-Mobile for years. Those are the exact plan benefits that T-Mobile just chose to sacrifice. Without freebies like streaming subscriptions and phone deals, it’s now a lot easier to compare T-Mobile’s plans to smaller carriers like Mint Mobile or US Mobile.

What’s the point of paying $55/month or more at T-Mobile—with no guaranteed perks—when you can get the same coverage for $25/month elsewhere?

More from WhistleOut on phone plan perks

Wireless carriers love to use free perks to lure customers into more expensive plans. Unless you use a perk all the time, it’s rarely worth it to sign up for a premium plan. Here are some of our guides to help you decide if phone plan perks are worth your money:
