Phone AI is everywhere now, and every new feature raises the same question for anyone on a limited data plan: Does AI use mobile data? The answer depends entirely on where the AI does its thinking. Features that run directly on your phone use zero data, while features that send your request to a server use some, and voice conversations use far more than anything else.

I ranked the creepiest and most useful features in my guide to hidden AI phone features, and this piece looks at the same features from a different angle: What they cost you in mobile data.

On-device AI vs. cloud AI: What actually uses data

On-device AI runs entirely on your phone's processor, so it works without an internet connection and never touches your data plan. Google's Gemini Nano model powers several on-device features on Pixel and Galaxy phones, and Samsung's Live Translate handles call translation locally once you download the language pack.

Cloud AI sends your request to a company's servers and sends the answer back, which uses mobile data whenever you're off Wi-Fi. The Gemini assistant, ChatGPT, and the heavier requests behind Siri AI all rely on the cloud.

The good news is that text requests are tiny. A typed question and a long answer amount to a few kilobytes, which is smaller than loading most webpages.

How much data do Gemini, ChatGPT, and Siri use?

None of the major AI companies publish official data usage figures, so the numbers below are estimates based on how much audio, text, and image data each feature sends and receives.

Estimated data use by AI feature

AI feature Estimated data use Comparable to
Gemini or ChatGPT text chat 1–5MB per hour Reading email
Gemini Live or ChatGPT Voice 60–120MB per hour (1–2MB per minute) Streaming music
Voice chat with camera or screen sharing 250MB or more per hour A video call
AI image generation 2–5MB per image Uploading a photo
Galaxy AI Live Translate, Interpreter, and on-device features 0MB after the language pack downloads Nothing at all
Siri AI Apple Intelligence cloud requests 1–5MB per hour Reading email

What about Siri AI on iPhone?

Siri AI handles as many requests as it can on the iPhone itself, so basic commands like setting alarms or opening apps work without any connection and cost you nothing. Heavier requests go to Apple's Private Cloud Compute servers, which is where that per-request data use comes from. To see exactly which requests left your phone, go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Apple Intelligence Report. Our Apple Intelligence guide covers the rest of Apple's AI features.

What Gemini Live sends off your phone

Gemini Live streams your voice to Google's servers for the entire conversation, then streams Gemini's spoken answers back, which is why voice chats use so much more data than typing. Turning on the camera or sharing your screen during Gemini Live adds a video feed on top of the audio, which pushes data use into video-call territory.

I like Gemini Live for quick questions while I'm cooking dinner and my hands are covered in something questionable, but I'd never leave a long Gemini Live session running on mobile data with the camera on.

Can phone AI use up your data cap?

Phone AI can use up a data cap, but only if voice and camera features become a daily habit. At 60 to 120MB per hour, 1GB of data covers roughly 8 to 16 hours of Gemini Live or ChatGPT Voice. Fifteen minutes of voice chat a day works out to somewhere between 450MB and 900MB a month, which is a meaningful chunk of a 5GB prepaid plan.

Text chats and on-device features barely register, so the AI apps worth watching are the same streaming-heavy apps on our list of popular apps wasting data. On a Samsung Galaxy, you can check exactly how much each AI app uses in Settings > Connections > Data usage > Mobile data usage, and our guide to data usage explains what counts against your plan.

Using AI every day? Make sure your plan can keep up.

If voice chats with Gemini or ChatGPT are part of your routine, an unlimited plan takes the guesswork out of it. Our list of unlimited phone plans that save you money is a good place to start, or compare a few options below.

Phone AI and mobile data: FAQ

Does AI on my phone use mobile data?

AI on your phone uses mobile data only when a feature sends your request to the cloud, like the Gemini assistant, ChatGPT, or Gemini Live. On-device features like Galaxy AI Live Translate use no data, and typed AI chats use only a few megabytes per hour.

What does "Process data only on device" mean on Samsung phones?

"Process data only on device" is a Galaxy AI setting that keeps every AI request on your phone instead of sending it to Samsung's servers. You can turn it on in Settings > Galaxy AI > Process data only on device. Features like Live Translate and Interpreter keep working, but cloud-based features like webpage summaries stop.

Can phone AI use up my data cap?

Phone AI can use up a data cap if you rely on voice features, since Gemini Live and ChatGPT Voice use roughly 60 to 120MB per hour. Typed AI chats and on-device features barely register, so most people on a capped plan only need to watch voice and camera sessions.

Does phone AI work without internet?

Phone AI works without internet only for on-device features. Galaxy AI Live Translate and Interpreter work offline once you download the language packs, and many basic assistant commands still run locally, but the Gemini assistant, ChatGPT, and any feature that needs current web information require a connection.
