A portable device needs to be a comfortable size to take on the go—just like the iPhone Duo. It's true that the iPad Mini has a bigger screen, but a bigger screen on a portable device that's meant to be small isn't a good thing.
The iPhone Duo sports a 7.6-inch unfolded inner screen, compared to the slightly larger 8.3-inch screen on the iPad Mini. And while bigger is usually better, when it comes to versatility, the Duo is the smarter choice. The Duo has enough room to watch YouTube comfortably and a compact design, so it isn't too clunky to store when you're out and about.

Folded up, the iPhone Duo shrinks to just 5.4 inches and can easily fit in your pocket. The only time I've ever gotten an iPad Mini into a pocket was the kangaroo pouch on a hoodie, and that barely counts. When your everyday phone can already do tablet things, you don't need a second device you only reach for once in a while.

The iPhone Duo weighs less than an iPad Mini, too
The Duo weighs 254 grams while the Wi-Fi iPad Mini weighs 293 grams, with the cellular version at 297 grams. Not only does the iPad Mini weigh more, but you also have to keep in mind that you're probably carrying an extra device with you—your phone! Unless you connect your iPad Mini to your cell provider by paying extra for your tablet add-on, you're probably carrying around double the devices.
The Duo is your phone and your bigger screen in a single device, which means the actual weight you're saving is closer to an entire phone's worth, not just the 39-gram difference between the two.
Display: The Duo's display is brighter and smoother

The Duo's display just feels more responsive. Its 120Hz OLED panel stays smooth even mid-fold, and it can hit a peak brightness of 3,000 nits with an anti-glare finish (that you can even see outside). The iPhone Duo's display responsiveness is superior.

On the contrary, the iPad Mini still runs a much slower 60Hz LCD display with a brightness of only 500 nits. A slower refresh rate in Hertz is extremely noticeable on a larger screen. So the iPad Mini gives users a standard screen experience and resolution, but it feels much more lethargic compared to the iPhone Duo, which runs at double the refresh rate.

The Duo runs on Apple's newest processor, the A20 Pro. It's the same chip you can find in this year's iPhone 18 Pro as well. The iPad Mini, on the other hand, is still running the A17 Pro, which first showed up in iPhones back in 2023.
The newer the chip, the better and faster Apple's latest features can function. Take Siri AI, for instance. With the A20 Pro chip, it'll run more smoothly and take less time to compute than if it were running on an older chip. Basically, as Apple's software advances, it needs more power to run. If you invested in an iPad Mini today, it might not be able to handle Apple's latest updates next year.
The Duo offers triple the battery life
The iPhone Duo's battery life can last up to 31 hours of video playback (constant streaming). That's three times as much as the iPad Mini's meager 10 hours of video playback. In general, that efficiency also means the Duo holds its charge longer during heavy use, since video playback is one of the more power-hungry tasks a phone handles.
As generations advance, it seems device battery life just can't keep up. There are always tips and tricks for more battery life, but sometimes you just need to upgrade to a newer phone.
Camera: The iPhone Duo's cameras take better pictures

The iPhone Duo sports a 48MP Dual Fusion system, with a 48-megapixel main camera and a 48-megapixel ultra-wide combo. You can capture insane detail (sometimes too much detail if you ask me) with the Duo's back-camera system. But one of the coolest new features on Apple's foldable is the 12-megapixel under-display selfie and FaceTime camera.
Just for perspective, 12MP is the maximum camera quality you get from the front-facing and rear cameras on the iPad Mini. Given the current version of the Mini as released in 2024, it's a few generations behind the latest Apple hardware upgrades.
Utility: The Duo does so much more
The Duo props itself up on its own, in a seated position flat on a table or standing like a small tent, without a case or a stand. An iPad Mini needs an accessory, case, or a separate stand to do the same thing.
Split View on the iPhone Duo gives you two apps stacked next to each other the moment you open the phone, so you get the productivity boost of a bigger screen without digging a second device out of your bag first. And when you're done, it folds back down into something that fits in a pocket or a small purse, instead of a tablet that needs its own padded sleeve or bag to survive the trip.
Price: The Duo is expensive, but it's worth it
The Duo is expensive, but you're buying a tablet and a phone in one. That (at least for me) justifies the price difference. The iPhone Duo pricing starts at $1,999, while an iPad Mini runs about $599. But going the Mini route means you'll end up spending elsewhere to get a comparable setup.

If you were to pair an iPad Mini with a new iPhone 18 Pro, the total cost is about the same price as the Duo. But remember that you still have to pay for a separate cellular line if you want to use your tablet with cellular data instead of a hotspot when away from Wi-Fi. Plus, add in the inconvenience of having to carry around an extra device.
At triple the price of the iPad Mini, many iPhone fans will probably have to think twice about committing despite Apple's new leasing program. However, just keep in mind that iPads typically last between 5–7 years if you keep them in perfect condition. Once that period is over, your device won't support software updates anymore and will be obsolete. In reality, an iPad Mini might not last you much longer.
