Apple has officially announced the iPhone 18 Pro, and it appears to be a solid upgrade over the iPhone 17 Pro. It includes a new variable-aperture main camera, a faster A20 Pro chip, and a meaningfully larger battery, along with other minor improvements like an updated Dynamic Island. With these hardware updates also came a $100 price increase, so the iPhone 18 Pro starts at $1,199, while the iPhone 17 Pro is still $1,099 from most carriers.
If you have an older iPhone and are deciding between both devices, your decision will mostly come down to choosing between updated camera features and how much you want to pay. Many of the iPhone 18 Pro's best software features—like Siri AI's most advanced capabilities—will be available with both series. If you already have an iPhone 17 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro probably does not offer enough to warrant an early upgrade.

The iPhone 17 Pro's current $1,099 price is the MSRP, not a guarantee. The device has been discontinued, so Apple no longer sells it online or at physical Apple Stores. There are no major design upgrades between the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro. Both phones use the same 6.3-inch Super Retina XDR panel at 120Hz, triple-camera array, and aluminum unibody design.
Both models also maintain the programmable action button and Camera Control side button.

There are different color options between the two models:
- iPhone 18 Pro / Pro Max: Black, Silver, Glacier (light blue), Burgundy (wine red)
- iPhone 17 Pro: Cosmic Orange, Deep Blue, Silver
The major interface design change is with the Dynamic Island. The iPhone 18 Pro has a redesigned, smaller Dynamic Island that can display up to three Live Activities at once. For example, it could show an Uber Eats delivery, live sports score, and a timer all running simultaneously, while the 17 Pro is limited to one or two tasks. It's a decent quality-of-life upgrade on the 18 Pro, but it's probably not a reason to spend $1,199 on its own.

The iPhone 18 Pro moves to Apple's newest A20 Pro chip, which is a significant improvement. The 17 Pro's A19 Pro runs a 6-core CPU paired with a 6-core GPU and a single 16-core Neural Engine. The 18 Pro bumps that to a 7-core GPU with Neural Accelerators and a dual 16-core Neural Engine, which doubles the Neural Engine and adds a stronger GPU.
You won't feel much of a difference for everyday tasks like streaming, texting, and scrolling social media. Instead, it's most helpful for tasks that require heavier workloads, like photo and video editing, mobile gaming, and multitasking for work. If you're the kind of person who pushes your iPhone hard, the A20 Pro might be worth the higher price.
The good news is that both processors can power Siri AI, which is coming with iOS 27. Apple is giving its most advanced Siri AI features—like expressive voices and upgraded dictation—to the Pro models of both generations.

The camera is the top reason to consider the iPhone 18 Pro over the 17 Pro. Apple gave the 18 Pro's main camera a mechanical variable aperture, which is the first time it's done this on any iPhone.
The 17 Pro's triple camera system is fixed at ƒ/1.6 (main), ƒ/2.2 (ultra-wide), and ƒ/2.8 (telephoto). The 18 Pro's main camera can now physically shift between four aperture settings using a mechanical shutter built into the camera lens. Apple Reference Image is a niche feature for most people, but it's a huge deal for photographers, journalists, or anyone who needs the capability to prove their image's authenticity.

The battery capacity improved on the iPhone 18 Pro, which is something Apple tries to do every year. The iPhone 18 Pro is rated for up to 36 hours of video playback, compared to 33 hours on the 17 Pro. Truthfully, that's a pretty small bump, but it's another benefit to consider if you were already leaning towards the 18 Pro.
If you want the biggest battery life Apple's Pro lineup has to offer, the iPhone 18 Pro Max is rated at up to 45 hours.
What does the iPhone 18 Pro have that the iPhone 17 Pro is missing?
The iPhone 18 Pro has some unique features, but the most valuable ones are limited to the camera system. If you're not a photographer, it's worth looking at how you use your phone and asking yourself if these kinds of features are worth paying an extra $100.

If you want the biggest jump in this year's lineup, look at the iPhone 18 Pro Max instead. It offers the same camera system and chip as the standard 18 Pro, but with a 6.9-inch display and Apple's largest-ever battery improvement at up to 45 hours of video playback.
Should I upgrade to the iPhone 18 Pro?
If you currently have an iPhone 17 Pro, there's no need to rush out and upgrade. The camera improvements and improved processing power are real, but they're aimed at people who already care about things like image editing, manual camera control, low-light performance, or image authenticity. If that's not you, the 17 Pro does almost everything the 18 Pro does at a lower price.
If you have a much older phone, the iPhone 18 Pro is worth a longer look. Personally, I've been holding onto my iPhone 14 Pro for four years and feel like it's a solid model for me to upgrade to. I like the manual camera aperture, the Burgundy color, and I tend to buy the newest models when I upgrade because I hold onto my devices for four to five years. Plus, with my side hustles in journalism and my photography hobby, the Apple Reference Image feature is a big deal to me.
Should I upgrade to the iPhone 17 Pro?
If you're someone who wants excellent camera capabilities and the best Siri AI has to offer, but don't want to pay $1,199 for them, the iPhone 17 Pro is a better upgrade instead. Remember, Siri AI's top-tier features aren't gated by generation, so going with a 17 Pro instead doesn't cost you anything. Plus, it has an extremely similar camera system to the 18 Pro. While it's missing the new manual aperture controls, most people will never use them anyway. Finally, there's also nothing wrong with simply preferring the instantly classic Cosmic Orange color over the iPhone 18 Pro's more muted selection.
The one thing to note is you won't be buying the iPhone 17 Pro directly from Apple. Instead, you'll need to pick one up through a carrier deal or a retailer like Walmart or Best Buy while their stock lasts. This may cause problems if you're looking for a specific color or storage size, but it can also help you score additional deals from retailers hoping to get rid of this older model as quickly as they can.
