Apple iPhone 12 Leaks: Design

Some of the first rumblings of a major design change came from the reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who as early as September 2019 reported that the iPhone 12 would have a boxy body akin to the older iPhone 4. Recent “dummy models,” created from specs leaked by companies who make cases for iPhones seem to corroborate this information. In the past, dummy models have been fairly accurate to the final and official iPhone designs. So, you can expect the iPhone 12 to ditch the rounded edges of the iPhone 11 for flatter edges that should help you grip the phone a little better.

According to images leaked on Twitter in April by Fudge (@choco_bit), the top notch on the front display of the iPhone 12 phones will be significantly smaller. This will certainly be a welcome change to the iPhone design.

Apple iPhone 12 Leaks: Display Sizes

Again, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo seemed to have the earliest information (around December 2019) regarding the display sizes for the iPhone. His report suggested that Apple would be offering four different iPhone 12 models in three different sizes. Several reports, and the recently released dummy models, have corroborated this.

According to all these reports, the iPhone 12 will be offered with the following display sizes:

5.4”
6.1” (two different models at this size)
6.7”

The 5.4” model will be the smallest iPhone in quite some time, while the 6.7” iPhone 12 (believed to be the iPhone 12 Pro Max) will be the largest iPhone to date. According to the initial report from Kuo, all four iPhone 12 model will come with OLED displays. This a departure from the iPhone 11, with the base model sporting an LCD display.

Apple iPhone 12 Leaks: Cameras

It is widely believed that the 5.4” and one of the 6.1” iPhone models will feature rear dual-camera systems, while the other 6.1” model and the 6.7” model will have triple-camera systems. It has also been rumored that the two higher end models will also have LiDAR Scanners like the ones that are now currently on the latest iPad Pro.

Leaked images posted to Instagram in March by Concepts iPhone (@conceptsiphone) seem to show what the rear camera system, including the LiDAR Scanner, will look like on the iPhone 12. According to Concepts iPhone, they obtained the images from leaked iOS 14 files.

Being that Apple has already implemented the LiDAR Scanner into the iPad Pro, these rumors and leaks don’t seem to be very far-fetched. With the LiDAR Scanner, you can expect to see some interesting use of augmented reality with the iPhone 12.

Apple iPhone 12 Leaks: No Charger or EarPods

In June, analyst Dan Ives reported that the new iPhones will not come with earbuds. Other rumors have suggested that Apple will also not include a charging brick with any of the iPhone models.

Leaked images of the iPhone 12 packaging posted by Concepts iPhone on July 7 seem to verify these rumors. The thin packaging certainly leaves no room for a charging brick and EarPods. If you need either of these for your new phone, you might have to purchase them separately.

Apple iPhone Leaks: Pricing

It’s clear that the base 5.4” iPhone 12 model will be the most affordable of the new iPhones. Rumors suggest it will be even cheaper than the iPhone 11 base model. However, very recent leaks (July 8) from analyst Jeff Pu has the iPhone 12 starting at $740. This is $50 more than the starting price of the base iPhone 11.

Earlier information (April) from leaker Jon Prosser had the iPhone 12 starting at $649. Price is one of the hardest things to pin down. So, at this point things are still very much up in the air.

iPhone 12 Leaks: 5G

Despite many of Apple’s smartphone competitors already adopting 5G support for their devices, the company has yet to dive into this new technology. However, that will surely change with the iPhone 12 models, as it’s long been known that at least some of them will be 5G compatible.

Again, we turn to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo who in January reported that all of the iPhone 12 models will be 5G compatible. This might help to explain the more expensive price for the base model iPhone 12.

Should You Wait for the iPhone 12?

With all this leaked information, you probably have a decent idea of what the iPhone 12 is going to be. Now you might be wondering if you should wait for the release to get the new Apple smartphone.

If you want a new iPhone just for the novelty of having a new toy, waiting is probably a good idea. On the other hand, if you simply need a new phone, you probably don’t need to wait. Yes, 5G will be cool, but it’s still going to be a while before we see the full benefits of the new technology.
