What we know so far

  • Cracked inner screens are showing up on Apple's $1,999 iPhone Duo within hours or days of its October 23 launch.
  • Apple says a small number of units are affected and owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement, even without AppleCare+.
  • The cause is likely the hinge support bar pressing into the screen, but Apple hasn't named a cause or a fix.
  • Out of warranty, an inner screen replacement costs $999, which is half the price of a new Duo.

You finally get your hands on the phone you've waited months for. You unfold it a handful of times, show it off to a friend, and then you hear a pop that makes your stomach drop.

Some iPhone Duo owners say the inner screen on Apple's $1,999 foldable cracked along the hinge within hours or days of use.

Apple has now responded in a statement to MacRumors, saying it's aware of an inner display issue on a small number of Duos. I'll be honest, I'm not shocked. When I wrote about why I'd skip the iPhone Duo in September, I said the hinge wasn't as perfect as the keynote made it look.

What Apple says about iPhone Duo screen cracking

Apple's statement opens by calling the early response to the Duo "incredibly positive" before acknowledging the display issue. The company says affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement.

Apparently Apple is saying that if you haven't had an issue already, you probably won't. According to Apple, the cracks show up shortly after purchase, so it's not a defect that should creep up on you months from now.

What Apple didn't say is even more concerning, though. Apple hasn't explained what's causing the cracks or whether a fix is planned.

What's happening with cracked iPhone Duo screens?

The reports started on October 23, the day the Duo went on sale, and they've come in from owners in several countries. Most of them describe the same pattern.

  • A stuck feeling or pop when unfolding: Owners say the hinge feels tight or they hear a popping or crunching sound right before the damage appears.
  • A crack along the hinge: Many of the breaks land in the same spot, along the fold line on the lower half of the 7.6-inch inner display.
  • A white patch or bright line: Some screens also show a band of dead or stuck pixels across one side of the display.

Why iPhone Duo hinge problems aren't a total surprise

Foldables have a rocky history at launch. Back in 2019, Samsung's first Galaxy Fold broke within days, and it took Samsung a few generations to get the hinge right.

To be fair to Apple, critics praised the Duo's hinge and its barely visible crease in early reviews. But a polished keynote isn't the reality of the situation. If you want the full picture of what the Duo gets right, our iPhone Duo explainer covers the display, battery, and iOS 27 features in detail.

How to get a cracked iPhone Duo screen replaced for free

Apple says affected owners should contact AppleCare for a replacement, and you don't need AppleCare+ to qualify. AppleCare is Apple's support team and standard warranty, while AppleCare+ is the paid add-on that covers accidents like drops.

If your Duo is showing signs of damage, here are the steps to follow.

  1. Stop folding the phone. If the hinge feels tight or you hear a pop, don't force it open or closed, since that can make the damage worse.
  2. Take photos and back up your data. Snap pictures of the crack and any lines on the screen, then back up to iCloud or a computer before you hand the phone over.
  3. Contact AppleCare. Mention the inner display issue Apple has acknowledged so the rep knows what you're dealing with.
  4. Ask for a replacement unit. Owners have been getting replacements in Apple Stores, but stock is limited, so you may have to wait for a new Duo to come in.

Pro tip: Test your iPhone Duo hinge in the first few days

Since Apple says affected units crack shortly after purchase, your first few days with the Duo are the best time to spot a problem. Open and close it slowly a few times a day, and pay attention to any tight spots or popping sounds while you're still well inside Apple's return window.

How much does it cost to fix an iPhone Duo screen?

iPhone Duo repair Cost
Inner screen nano-texture cover $49 ($19 with AppleCare+)
Outer display $379
Inner display (out of warranty) $999

An inner screen replacement costs $999, which is half the price of a brand-new Duo. If your screen cracks from the defect Apple has acknowledged, you shouldn't have to pay that. If it cracks from a drop or a pocketful of sand, you could be looking at one of the most expensive phone repairs on the market.

Apple's list of orderable parts doesn't include a separate hinge, which suggests the hinge and folding screen get replaced together. On top of the Duo's already steep pricing, that's why many buyers are choosing AppleCare+ for this phone.

Should you buy the iPhone Duo right now?

If you already own a Duo and it's working fine, there's no reason to panic. Apple says most units aren't affected, and the reported failures tend to show up early, often within the first few hours or days.

If you're still on the fence, I'd wait a few weeks before spending $1,999 on a first-gen device. If you need a foldable now, the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold8 comes from a company that already worked through these growing pains years ago.

Either way, keep an eye out for an update from Apple on a cause or a revised hinge. And if you just bought a Duo, hang on to your receipt so you can act fast if something feels off.
